Farewell from JB,

It is with much sadness that we post our goodbyes. After 8 wonderful years, we have decided it is time to close our doors. Our dream had become a reality and then the economy changed that reality. Our love for the shop and Wheaton has carried us a long way. It has been a pleasure to meet each and every one of you. We never thought a small retail venture could have introduced us to so many extraordinary people.

After our shop has closed, we only hope that it' s memory lives on in the history of downtown Wheaton. We have accomplished so much and our hearts are heavy with this decision. However, small shops like ours need customers year long and in this economy only Christmas shoppers can't carry the load for the entire year. From the bottom of our hearts we thank those of you who have tried to support us and the downtown. We will not forget the love you have shown.

As many of you have gotten to know our wonderful group of employees - The JB Girls- they wish to say farewell also. Who would have thought that a group of 20 women could have bonded so deeply because of the love of one great idea...JB Winterberry.

Our "Farewell Sale" begins Monday, June 19th at 9am. All merchandise will be discounted 50% until our inventory is gone. Please stop in to say goodbye, reminisce and purchase a piece of JB Winterberry before it becomes a piece of history.

Our customers brought in cupcakes and recipes to share. There were many to choose from but based on overall taste, taste of the frosting, taste of the cake, decoration and presentation, the judging panel decided upon...

Marge Flashing's Sunflower cupcakes as the WINNER!

Congratulations to Marge who won a JB Winterberry gift certificate! Thank you to all who participated. Your entries were delicious and it was difficult to choose a winner!

So much YUM to go around!

Here is Marge's winning recipe. Let us know how your batch turns out!

Chocolate Sunflower Cupcakes

3 C. Flour

2 C. Sugar

½ C. Cocoa

2 tsp baking soda

1 tsp Salt

Combine above ingredients in a bowl. Add:

¾ C. Vegetable or Canola Oil

2 Tbs. Vinegar

1 Tbs. Vanilla

2 C. Cold Water

Whisk until smooth

Put cupcake liners in cupcake pans. Fill each ¾ full with batter. Bake fat 350 for 16 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely. You can use this batter in a 9x13 or two 9” rounds.

Posie Cream

1 C. shortening

¼ C. Butter, softened

3 C. Confectioner sugar

1 ½ tsp Vanilla

1/8 tsp Salt

Yellow food coloring

Red food coloring ( optional)

Mini chocolate morsels for decoration

yet another look at the frosting technique!

Cream together shortening and butter. Beat in sugar, vanilla and salt until light and fluffy. Add yellow food coloring to get the desired color. May add a drop of red food coloring if desired for a deeper color

To decorate, put a dab of icing in the center of each cupcake. Use a frosting tube with aleaf tip. Leave a space in the middle for the mini chips. Pipe seven leaves around the cupcake, then seven more, overlapping the first circles of leaves, carefully fill the center with the mini chips

Yes, we have returned from The Chicago Botanic Gardens Antique & Garden Fair. Our first big show and it was beautiful. The venue of course was exceptional and the thousands of visitors were very complimentary. A few items will be returning to the shop but many went home with buyers from the show. We were very happy to be a part of such an exciting event. Quite possibly our presence will be shown next year at this great show. It's great to get back into the shop. Our motivation from this show will transfer to the store. Look for some wonderful new ideas and displays.

This week will be busy at JB Winterberry as we prepare for several upcoming events.

Barb has been adding antique and vintage items almost daily and Julie has been replenishing the lovely displays with more and more "New" items as they arrive. Stop in and see for yourselves!

(We can't keep our new large wooden lanterns on the shelf. As soon as Mary Ellen adds her special touch with candles, greens and topped with a burlap bow, they fly out the door!)

This Saturday we will be participating in the Downtown Wheaton Open House.

We will be serving refreshments, playing Winterberry Bingo Ball and conducting a raffle as well.

We hope to see you!

Also, we will be hosting Terry Bramble once again this year.

He will be at the shop to create one of a kind silhouettes of yourself or a loved one!

There are still midday spaces available. Each sitting is 30 minutes and for the highest quality silhouette, he prefers children to be age 3 years and older.

If you would like to stop by to see his work, he will be in the shop Monday and Tuesday December 7th and 8th. If you would like to make an appointment for a sitting, please call soon. Spaces are filling quickly.

Christmas in the Wintery Woods of the Secret Garden

A frosted Christmas tree adorned with wintry ornaments. This room is so homey. Be sure to find the little ear muff ornaments. A reminder of colder days to come!
Mary Lake Thompson soaps and lotions coupled with Tag appetizer plates. Wonderful for entertaining or gift giving this holiday.

Cloches encase some pretty orchid vases. We added snow to give it the perfect winter touch. Pretty alone or in a grouping like you see above.

It's that time again!

The long awaited Holiday Premier!

JB is decked out with Halloween and this season is bigger and better than ever!

In addition, we have just completed our ever popular October Seminar.

It was a success. We had almost 30 women in attendance. What a great turnout.

This months seminar included, Decorating with Primitives, Fall Floral Flourishes, and Boolicious Party ideas.

Barb put together a wonderful display of primitive items for Fall. She included some fun everyday ideas too, like using a set of old door hinges as

" book ends".

Barb is just back from a buying trip and the shop has more primitives and large furniture pieces for you to add to your decor.

It will be just the right touch for warming up your harvest home!

Stop in the shop to see what she has found on her latest trip.

Martha showed how you can add a touch of Halloween NOW in your fall florals, and tweak them for a festive Thanksgiving look.

Julie showed some fantastic party ideas... like using a cool glass syringe and glass beakers to add that special something to your next party cocktail.

We have added lots of fun " lab" serving pieces to our Halloween tablescape in the Main Street Shop.

Julie also added whimsy to her presentation by adorning a cloche/mercury glass piece that just arrived today... with one of our darling, collectible ESC figures. ( which you can find in the Secret Garden... don't miss the cowardly lion...only a few left!)

This is our dog Penny! She laughs! Isn't she the cutest thing? She just turned 8 and we had her birthday party at McDonald's. She just loves french fries. She has been part of the store since the beginning. You may not see her (because she would lick you to death) but she visits when we are closed. Her big tail now seems to knock too much merchandise over but she loves to run in the hallway.
Well, Fall is in the air and we have a busy week coming up. As you may have heard, we are decorating a home for the Hinsdale Housewalk this year on October 4. It's great to be represented in another town. The Wheaton Housewalk has been postponed until the Spring (April 30). Then I (Julie) am off to New York with my daughter to celebrate her 16th birthday. This trip has been in the works for 2 years and it's finally here. So much to see on a long weekend. We will be visiting NYU, Columbia and FIT. Plus we will be doing some shopping and other sightseeing. The Big Apple in the Fall....awesome! Hope to see you all in the shop for your Halloween decorations. We have a great selection of Fall florals this year too! Customer comments have been excellent so I think we did good!!! See you soon.

"At Home with Julie & Barb 9/15/09"

We did it....the store is Autumnized! With 4 long days of sweat, creativity and all the JB girls helping, we pulled off an excellent Fall Premier. If you haven't paid a visit yet, be sure to plan a trip soon. Mr. Winterberry let his creative side shine by making 3 crypts in the graveyard portion of the shop. They are so popular that we are taking special orders! Manager Martha also showed off her talents by offering many handpainted original items this year. They are going fast especially her handpainted windows - crows, bats, spiders, you name it! Julie and Barb tried their hand at some original items also: silhouette branch paintings, witches music sheets, old decorated bottles and more. We are on a roll with the originality this year! Next on our to do list is to enjoy this beautiful weather whenever possible then start up the Hinsdale Housewalk. The walk is being held Sunday, Oct. 4th. It's our first time but we've been paired with a great house. Hope to see you soon at JB. We'll keep creating if you keep buying!

"At Home with Julie & Barb 9/2/09"

All our energies are being put into the creative thoughts for the Fall set-up. A cool graveyard is being designed. A colorful Halloween party table is in the works. Fun poison bottles are being made and even some creepy spider egg sacks. We love this time of year. Along with all this planning, we went to preview the home we will be decorating this year at the Hinsdale Housewalk. (Wheaton decided to do their Housewalk in the Spring next year.) It's a great house with a beautiful pond and gardens outside. It is being held on Oct. 4. Since we've been busy at the shop and at home getting ready for the Fall Premier on Sept. 10, we haven't had time for a personal life. Our poor dog and Julie's kids get the short end of the stick for the next week. But....it's gonna look great and you'll be totally amazed as usual. See you soon.

Feels like Fall is already in the air. We are preparing ourselves for the set-up this weekend. We know that we will see all of you this Thursday for the annual Fall Premier beginning at 10am. Life's been crazy at JB...Barb and Val have kicked off our new service "JB Decorate". Our first clients are being serviced. To get on the schedule, all you have to do is call. Looks like Fall is off to a good start. As you may have read in the latest newsletter, we will need everyone's support during the Fall & Christmas holidays in order to make it to 2010. We're trying our best so please stop in. Our creative juices are flowing for some great Halloween displays. Mr. Winterberry has been busy creating some display coffins for our graveyard scene. He admitted that they look cool but he was a little creeped out. They will look great in our displays. We're off to pick up the hay and cornstalks (our Fall decor staples from Sonny Acres.) Plan a trip out to see us on Thursday, September, 10th from 10am-8pm!

"At Home with Julie & Barb"

Our Fall work schedule has begun so we will be in the shop together every Wednesday and Thursday. Our college girls are back to school (one at Bowling Green and one on an intership at DisneyWorld.) Our first employees to make the Secret Garden come to life in 2004 are retiring this week. It's a year full of changes. Barb has been working hard to get all her strength back from her heart attack and has been in a real creative display type of mood. So needless to say that the old summer displays have come back to life. Julie has been sketching the shops getting ready to move everything around for the Fall. Back to school time definitely gets you in the mood. We just finished selling at the DuPage All Night Flea Market. Lots of work but some fun was had when our friends and family came to visit, otherwise a total non-moneymaker. Think we'll try a different flea market next month. Fall is always busy for us because it's our favorite time of year. Both our birthdays are in November (1 & 4) so our hearts are always ready for Autumn. Our next big thing is the Fall Premier on September 10th. We are trying to come up with some awesome displays. See you soon!

Without her being so web savvy, this blogspot would not be in existence. Barb and I thank her for her continued hard work and creativity. Memorial Day is a day of reflection and remembrance. It is a day to remember all of our Fallen Heroes from all of the wars.

It is a day to think about the families that will forever grieve for their lost loved one. It is a day to be thankful to those who have served and made the ultimate sacrifice. They fought and died to win the freedom and democracy that we Americans cherish so dearly.

Ever wonder how JB Winterberry does it? Here's how!

Our planters have, year to year, been filled with beautiful blooms, carefully selected and planted by Prosek's Greenhouse in Winfield.

We wanted to share with you the names and types of plants that they provide for us!

This planter can be found by the Secret Garden back door.

It is a Sunny and hot location. It receives strong afternoon Sun.

This has been planted for Spring with variegated ivy, pansy pots and the pretty pink/peachy delicate blooms of Alstroemeria, this one is named " Theresa".

"These tubers make continuously new shoots and flowers until the frost comes in" Low maintenance tender perennials, hardy to USDA Zone 7.

These planters have been planted with pretty plants as a "base" for the blooms.

Prosek's lays the ground with Spider plants, asparagus fern and variegated ivy.

They place small pots of pansy or viola that can be removed after the cool Spring and replaced with a Summer bloomer such as Geranium or coleus.

In the planters pictured at the top of this blog post, in addition to the plants listed above, you will find Bridal Veil, a tiny olive leaf plant with white flowers, and the pretty purple blooms of Mona Lavender ( plectranthus)

These planters have an Eastern Exposure and shade in the afternoon.

Planters are lined with a cocoa fiber mat, available at Prosek's as well.

We hope you will try these looks at home as well.

Here is a recipe for you to try…it was one of our favorites last year.

Southern Bacon Crisps

½ C freshly grated Parmesan cheese

1 lb bacon, cut in half

1 sleeve Waverly Wafers or other buttery rectangular crackers

1. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees. Place 1 teaspoon of the cheese on each cracker and wrap tightly with a strip of bacon (no toothpick required!).

Place the wrapped crackers on a broiler rack on a baking sheet and put the baking sheet on the oven rack ; bake for 2 hours or until the bacon is done or 350 degrees for 40 minutes. DO NOT TURN Drain on paper towels . Serve hot or at room temperature

A little about us...

JB Winterberry was founded by mother/daughter team, Barb Mueller and Julie Lancia, seven years ago. Our mission statement is " Dedicated to Creating A Beautiful Home". That was our founding statement and still it holds true today, seven years later.

Our loyal staff believes that Customer Service should be of utmost importance and we hope you feel our dedication, everytime you step through our doors.

JB Winterberry is comprised of three Beautiful and Unique Shops.

The Main Street Shop is our Original Shop. When you enter, your senses will come alive with the fragrance of HillHouse Reed Diffusers. Your eyes will rest on beautiful antique hand-colored etchings specially framed for JB Winterberry. The hedge apple green walls will make you feel comfortable as you wander amongst the wonderful antique finds. There are plenty of new home decor items as well. We know you will love your visit.

Next you will wander down our hall, it has become a shop all it's own. There you will find a great selection of garden benches, arbors and urns in all shapes, styles and sizes. Just ask one of the "JB girls" to help you find just the right one for you.

At the end of the hall , you will find our Gathering Room. This room features some of our larger pieces, china cabinets, desks and farm tables. Archipelago Candle - Bath and Body line are featured here also. This room offers a " library" feel. The displays are beautifully designed and ready for you to enjoy. We are always happy to help you design a vignette for your own home. Just Ask!

Down the wide staircase, you will find the "Secret Garden". Bringing the outdoors into your home is our inspiration here. Architectural finds, outdoor Fiberstone urns and statues, florals (we are told we have the best around) and darling metal yard and garden decorations abound. We know you will love this room. We feature Votivo candles, room sprays, soaps and lotions. You will surely find the perfect gift here!
